I think people don't care but in the good sense of the phrase i.e. they are not bothered by you. You (and Susan!) are quiet and polite which goes a long way to to helping people accept you for whoever you choose to be. There may be a certain amount of 'British reserve' in the mix as well - people not wanting to say anything for fear of causing offense, especially to someone who is obviously a nice person.
